The original Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Genesis (or internationally known as the Mega Drive) was a very special game for me. It took me a while to beat it too. With that said, it isn't the best installment of the series.
While most people have moved on to newer systems and newer video games, there are still folks who like to play classic games. One such classic and memorable game is Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. With so many remakes and re-releases out for the game, is it worth tracking down a vintage copy?
The Original Sonic game (henceforth referred to as Sonic 1) isn't as story based as later games in the franchise. The story is that the evil Dr. Eggman/ Robotnik has kidnapped the animal friends of Sonic, and now Sonic has to rescue them from the robots they have been imprisoned in. Pretty simple, but that's really all we needed for this game, as the main point is the gameplay.
The game itself is a fun, fast paced platformer. Unlike other platformer games where you are encouraged to take your time and explorer, the gimmick to Sonic 1 is that you are time-limited and have to get through the stage as quick as possible. This is a fun gimmick, and the level designs can be very challenging to go through at a fast pace. Unfortunately, the controls are horrible. Many times, Sonic will not do what you tell him. Likewise, there are several glitches in the game that can kill sonic with no real mistakes on the part of the player. While the game is charming and is fun overall, it is full of bugs that can ruin the fun. Still, if you can learn to put up with some of the frustrations of its poor design, Sonic 1 can provide a curious or nostalgic gamer with a few hours of fun.
With all of the re-releases out though, a buyer must ask himself which one to chose. Used prices for the original cartridge for the Sega Genesis are around $2 US for a copy. If you still have a Genesis and don't own it, defiantly track down the cartridge. Otherwise, any of the re-releases will probably suffice for someone curious to play the first installment. However, some of the various ports can be glitchy in their own right, so be warned.
